Nifty Fifty - Is f1.4 too much on a 50mm Nikon lens?

Two years ago I bought a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor lens and I have used it a lot. It has been the tool of choice for my attempt to be artistic or creative.

If you'd like to purchase the Nifty Fifty, it is available on Amazon as follows, both the F1.4G and the F1.8

I want to share with you what I thought of the really low depth of field that I achieved with at f1.8 itself. The following tray of those delicious sweet treats was photographed at f1.8 at 1/4000 seconds. It was particular hard for the camera to properly focus to the mm itself. Imagine from focusing and taking the photo, I may be moving a tiny bit.

f1.8 at 1/4000 sec

I decided to increase the depth and do a photo at f2.8 and you can see the difference on the bottom tray.

I wish I had a photo at f1.4 of the tray but alas I didn't take any. But I did take the following one,. What I find to work at f1.4 is that if the surface you are trying to photograph is quite flat or at least the part of the photo you want to focus on is. For instance, an eye of a subject may work but nothing else will.

Portrait photography is great with this lens too and I wish I could show you some of those photos, but due to privacy issues, I am not able to. I took the best portrait of an absolutely beautiful girl with this lens on a great day we had together.. Anyway, feast yourself on some of my other photos using the 50mm f1.4
