Nifty Fifty - Is f1.4 too much on a 50mm Nikon lens?

Image
Two years ago I bought a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor lens and I have used it a lot. It has been the tool of choice for my attempt to be artistic or creative. If you'd like to purchase the Nifty Fifty, it is available on Amazon as follows, both the F1.4G and the F1.8   I want to share with you what I thought of the really low depth of field that I achieved with at f1.8 itself. The following tray of those delicious sweet treats was photographed at f1.8 at 1/4000 seconds. It was particular hard for the camera to properly focus to the mm itself. Imagine from focusing and taking the photo, I may be moving a tiny bit. f1.8 at 1/4000 sec I decided to increase the depth and do a photo at f2.8 and you can see the difference on the bottom tray. I wish I had a photo at f1.4 of the tray but alas I didn't take any. But I did take the following one,. What I find to work at f1.4 is that if the surface you are trying to photograph is quite flat or at least the part of the photo

What is a better way to test a zoom lense with low aperture than taking it out? Decided to go to Marwell zoo to test the bad boy. Feast your eyes on some of the photos      What do you I think of it? I managed to get the lens second hand for £330 and I debated whether to review it based on the price I paid for or it's original price. Since I don't make enough money from photography, and also I doubt I will be using this lens for the type of work I get to do... I've decided to look at it as a purchase for pleasure at the value of £330 itself rather that it's original £1100 or so. Low light capabilities Compared to a basic zoom lens at 200mm and around f4 to f5, the sigma allows me to have a much faster shutter speed as you'd expect at f2.8 on the same ISO settings. I managed to take some good shots as shown above on a very cloudy dark day. I decided on the day to lower my ISO settings for better quality photos than I would have done with my 18-10

Finding photos for the office

The management team of my company of mostly men working in Information Technology decided one fine morning that "Hang on, we can't live and work like this! we got to get some colours and art here. What could we do? "I know, let's get some photos from members of staff on here"... "Knowing those geeks out there, we better put some boundaries!"... Whaaaat? Ok, it didn't go like that, I wasn't in the meeting and I'm sure the idea was good. The team decided that we nee a Surrey Hills theme on the walls, seeing we work very close to many. But Photos?!? hello? I can't let that opportunity go. I need to get at least one photo on the wall. So, with the amazing support of my other half who I woke up at 7.30, and I went out hunting for photos. I did make it up to her with a really nice breakfast in a farm shop though. We even treated ourselves to Macarons. It was my first time and she couldn't believe it! Come on, i didn't even know wh
